The Barossa is located in South Australia, about 70km north-east of Adelaide, the state’s capital city. Just an hour’s drive north east of the Adelaide airport, it’s simple to jump in your car (or a hire car) and quickly find yourself in the middle of one of the world’s most famous wine regions. Once you arrive, you will find it is only a short drive between the towns and hamlets.

Adelaide is well serviced by regular domestic and international flights. Once you arrive in Adelaide there are plenty of options to complete your journey to the Barossa. Car hire, Barossa tour operators and public transport are all available. For private charters, there is a light-plane airport at Parafield, just 45 minutes south of Barossa in metropolitan Adelaide. How do I drive to the Barossa from Adelaide?

There are a number of routes from the Adelaide Airport to the Barossa and you can choose depending on your time schedule and whether you're seeking a direct route or the scenic drive.

Direct route from Adelaide Airport via Northern Connector to Tanunda (1 hour 4 minutes)

Direct route from Adelaide Airport via Main North Road, Barossa Valley Way to Lyndoch and Tanunda (1 hour 34 minutes)

Scenic route from Adelaide Airpirt via North East Road through Chain of Ponds to Williamstown and Tanunda (1 hour 32 minutes)

Public transport

The Adelaide Metro rail service from Adelaide to Gawler Central operates a regular service 7 days a week, 365 days a year. For more information please visit the Adelaide Metro website.

LinkSA operates a daily bus service that connects the Barossa with the Adelaide Metro public transport service via the Gawler Railway Station. Check out the Angaston to Gawler/Evanston Timetable or for more information visit the LinkSA website.

Tours and transfers

If you are not driving yourself, there are plenty of fantastic tour companies located in the Barossa, as well as a number of others who service the region from Adelaide or surrounding areas. You can find the contact details for excellent tour operators here or contact a Visitor Information Centre.

By Bike

There are many routes by bike between Adelaide and the Barossa – quick and direct routes, the slow way via some of our famous wineries, by train to Gawler and via the Adelaide Hills. The most popular rides between Adelaide and the Barossa follow either the Gorge Road past Kangaroo Creek Reservoir to Williamstown via Kersbrook, or via Gumeracha.

An alternative route is Lower North East Road to Houghton and Inglewood to connect Chain of Ponds Road and South Para Road to Williamstown via Kersbrook.
